Gusset Pouch

The gusset pouch is a flexible packaging format engineered to hold higher volumes than flat pouch styles. Unlike 3-side or 4-side seal pouches, the gusset design incorporates an inward-folded panel — either along the sides (side gusset) or the bottom (bottom gusset) — that expands as the pouch is filled. This expansion creates meaningful internal capacity while the outer footprint stays compact and consistent on shelf.

Side gusset pouches are commonly used for retail-facing bulk products where strong shelf presence and a large printable surface area are important. The format stands flat on the back panel, presenting a wide billboard face to the consumer at shelf. It is well suited for products that need room to settle naturally after filling — particularly free-flowing solids like coffee, pet food, snacks, and granular supplements — while still displaying cleanly.

HMC Products HFFS equipment supports gusset pouch production across a wide range of sizes and output speeds. The format accommodates free-flowing powders, granules, seeds, and small solid items, and is compatible with high-barrier laminate structures and a variety of integrated features including reclosable zippers, degassing valves, and hang holes.

Side Gusset vs. Bottom Gusset: What's the Difference?

A side gusset pouch folds inward along both side edges, allowing the back panel to lay flat as a stable base. This format is common for coffee bags, pet food, and bulk snack retail. A bottom gusset pouch — also known as a stand-up pouch or doypack — folds inward at the bottom and stands upright on its own. Both gusset styles are designed to maximize internal volume; the choice between them depends primarily on how the product will be displayed, stored, and used.
